    Pre-Anesthesia RN

    The Pre-Anesthesia RN works in collaboration with the Anesthesia Physician to access the physical needs of the surgical patients and implement a plan of care.  Orders, interprets, and reports clinical test results to the physician prior to the surgery.  Submits medication order required, documents patient conditions, and provides patients with an overview on the form of anesthesia to be used and educates them on upcoming procedures.

    Centennial Medical Center is one of our largest hospitals located in the heart of downtown Nashville. Centennial is a 750-bed hospital with 55-60 ORs. Centennial has the most variety of cases including a Cardiac, PEDS, OB, Vascular, Neurology, ENT, Plastic, Robotics, General, Urology, Ortho, a Cancer Center and much more! Centennial is a for-profit hospital owned by HCA and known for efficiency and a high level of patient care. Centennial has 55 CRNAs, 35 MDs and 16 RNs. AMG has been providing Anesthesia services to Centennial for over 20 years and averages 39,000 cases a year.

    Essential Functions and Basic Duties:

    • Compiles scheduling information from computer, hardcopy schedules, and surgeons’ offices to obtain surgery dates, procedures, patient contact information, and appointment times.
    • Gathers previous medical records including cardiac and/or pulmonary testing and other anesthesia records, prepare copies for current surgical records, and forward to appropriate departments as necessary.
    • Obtains pre-operative medical histories and physical data on surgical patients through personal interviews via telephone or in-person to determine anesthesia delivery plan.
    • Evaluates and determines current health status noting medications prescribed and frequency of dosages.
    • Provides interpretations on medical status, records data collected, and provides reports to physicians.
    • Alerts anesthesiologist physicians and surgeons of unresolved health issues and acts as liaison between the physicians.
    • Advises patients and appropriate family members of medical status, medications to be taken prior to procedures, and educates them on the anesthesia process providing information on the type of anesthesia to be used, options to be considered, and possible risks.  Gives the patients and family member opportunities to ask questions and express concerns.  Provides guidance and reassurance if necessary and/or possible.
    • Prepares copies and compiles anesthesia packets including company history, anesthesia orders, and consent forms as required.
    • Follows instructions provided by physician in preparing the patients for surgery.
    • Completes anesthesia physicians’ orders for appropriate lab tests and medications required for specific procedures as outlines in company protocol, via direct verbal, or telephone orders from attending physicians.
    • Reviews and interprets lab test results and provides guidance on pre-operative treatments.
    • Notifies appropriate staff members of schedule changes, updates, and provides daily schedules with in-patient room assignments for post-op follow-up by anesthesiologist.
    • Maintains confidentiality and ensures patient safety and comfort.

    Performance Measurements:

    • Collects pertinent data using appropriate assessment techniques.
    • Documents relevant data legibly in the medical record according to company standards.
    • Consults with healthcare providers alerting them of serious health risks prior to surgical procedures.
    • Participates in ongoing educations activities related to clinical knowledge and professional issues.
    • Maintains patient confidently and provides a safe, privates, and conformable environment for patients during assessments.
    • Delivers care in a nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory manner and demonstrates ethical and appropriate behavior in a hospital environment.
    • Explains procedure(s) using correct understandable terminology to patients and family members prior to initiation.
    • Communicates with patients and family members if appropriate when the assessments are complete.
    • Demonstrates good judgement and analytical ability in preparing work for review.
    • Inspires confidence by remaining well0informed and prepared at all times.
    • Establishes good rapport and cooperative working relationships with personnel in the organization.
    • Attentive to detail, record-keeping and required paperwork inherent to the position.
    • Completes assignments accurately and on time.
    • Willingly accepts assignments to special projects.
    • Demonstrates ability to express elf in all areas of communication-verbally, written, or non-verbally.
    • Adheres to identified work schedule and notifies appropriate personal of changes in schedule.
    • Floats to other areas as assigned and responds to floating requests with a positive attitude.
    • Provides proper notification for absence as evidenced by Qgenda time and attendance records.
    • Assists patients, family members, significant others, physicians, and other employees in a friendly manner.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of and supports OSHA regulations regarding Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan and TB Exposure Control Plan by utilizing correct hand washing technique and personal protective requirement as required.

    Qualifications:

    Education/Certification:  Completion of an accredited nursing program, certification in critical care, and a TN state RN license.

    Experience Required:  Minimum of two years nursing experience and at least one year of critical care experience.

    Knowledge Required:

    • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, regulations, and practices to give and evaluate patient care.
    • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish and maintain a safe work environment.
    • Knowledge of advanced concepts, practices, and procedure within the field of critical care and surgical pre-op nursing.
    • Knowledge of OSHA guidelines for collecting, disposing, and working with contaminated or possible infectious materials or specimens.

Saint Thomas Midtown is a 680-bed hospital with 45-55 ORs and a non-profit hospital owned by Ascension Healthcare. Cases include OB, Vascular, Neurology, ENT, Plastic, General, Urology, two surgery centers, a joint center, and a spine center. Saint Thomas Midtown is also known for their high volume of OB, doing around 8,000 births a year. Saint Thomas Midtown averages 50 CRNA’s and 20 MDAs. AMG has been providing Anesthesia services to Saint Thomas Midtown for over 20 years and averages 32,000 cases a year.
